Tavastia Education Consortium

Tavastia Education Consortium (Koulutuskuntayhtymä Tavastia) provides education in Tavastia General Upper Secondary Education (Lukiokoulutus), Vanajavesi Adult Education Centre (Vanajaveden opisto) and Tavastia Vocational College (Ammattiopisto Tavastia). The multicultural Tavastia Education Consortium coordinates and participates plenty of international and national projects.

The six member municipalities in this consortium are Akaa, Hattula, Hämeenlinna, Janakkala, Pälkäne and Urjala. The main office of Tavastia Education Consortium is situated in the city of Hämeenlinna, the oldest inland town in Finland. Hämeenlinna has 68 000 inhabitants and is situated 100 km north of Helsinki, the capital of Finland.

Tavastia General Upper Secondary Education consists of four Upper Secondary Schools: Kauriala, Lammi, Lyseo (also for adults) and Parola. These upper secondary schools have ca. 1 500 students. The three-year studies lead to the matriculation examination.

Vanajavesi Adult Education Centre offers courses in subjects relating to citizenship skills and society and in different crafts and subjects on a recreational basis. Vanajavesi Adult Education Centre has over 80 locations where to teach courses because subsidiary is one of its main principles. Vanajavesi Adult Education Centre provides study opportunities mostly for adults but also for children in cases that there are no other organisations to offer those possibilities. It organizes also immigrant education. In Vanajavesi Adult Education Centre it is possible to study for example acting, writing, dance, physical training, visual arts, music, wood turning, sewing, weaving, foreign languages, mathematics, child care, information technology and many other subjects. The function of Vanajavesi Adult Education Centre is based on the Liberal Adult Education Act.

Tavastia Vocational College is one of the biggest upper secondary vocational colleges of its kind in Finland. It provides vocational qualifications in 33 study programs for 2300 youth students. The duration of studies is three years and the teaching language is Finnish. The six fields of vocational education and training in the college are

  • Social Sciences, Business and Administration
  • Social Services, Health and Sports
  • Technology, Communications and Transport
  • Tourism, Catering and Domestic Services

Tavastia Vocational College provides, together with the Tavastia General Upper Secondary Education and Vanajavesi Adult Education Centre, a wide range of optional (vocational and general) studies. The students of the vocational college also have an opportunity to choose upper secondary school studies together with the vocational studies to make both matriculation examination and vocational qualification at the same time.

In adult education Tavastia Vocational College provides 70 different vocational qualifications and personnel training for over 3500 students annually. Additionally, Tavastia Vocational College organises integration training for immigrants, basic education for adult immigrants and preparatory study programs for immigrants within the vocational college. Tavastia Vocational College provides apprenticeship training both in youth and adult education. The expertise, up-to-date facilities and equipment give excellent possibilities to organise tailor-made training to face the needs of enterprises.
